UNODC has been approached by Fula Africa, a community based organisation working in the area of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants amongst the migrant community, and in particular the Malawian migrant community in South Africa. The organisation’s activities are centred around advocacy and awareness raising awareness on the risks of unsafe irregular migration in the SADC region using the services of smugglers and traffickers along uncharted routes, and the abuses women and children in particular are subjected to en route to South Africa and on arrival in the country. The organisation has since compiled stories of women of have been subjected to various abuses by traffickers and smugglers while trying to flee rural impoverished areas in Malawi to seek greener pastures in South Africa. The book serves as an awareness raising tool, written from the perspective of the trafficked or smuggled migrant, both for the general public and law enforcement and other agencies with a statutory duty to protect migrants vulnerable to trafficking and smuggling to better understand the plight of this vulnerable group. Fula Africa has requested UNODC’s assistance with professional editing, publishing, printing and launching of the book, which is entitled “Wamamma Chronicles” – Wamamma is the chiTumbuka word for Women.
